Abstract
Nowadays, the profession and translation practice have changed rapidly because of the development of information technology, globalization, and the advancement of digital technology. As a result, the world of translation has changed into literal translation, localization, trans-editing, trans-creation, adaptation, etc. The translated texts also vary from printed texts to on-screen texts. One of available on-screen texts come from on-line news site for example from Foreign Ministry site. Due to its real-time nature, on-line news should be immediately translated to fulfill the deadline. One of the solutions to get the translation results rapidly is by using information technology such as machine translation or translation software. However, despite the speed of the translation, the accuracy of the translation using information technology is often unreliable, particularly in terms of syntactic arrangement. IT-based technology focuses on the transfer of meaning of each word so that the word order is abandoned. Consequently, the message of the original text is not fully conveyed in the target text. This research employs a qualitative study to compare the translation results of five human translators and Google translate of fifty noun phrases. These noun phrases were taken from on-line news from Foreign Ministry site. The purpose is to discover the strategies and errors in translation done by either human or machine. Results show that both human and Google translate still make errors in translation, even though the nature of their errors differ.
