Abstract
English for Business Presentation (EBP) is one of the courses that aims to equip the students with employability skills, in particular, business communication. The course is designed for new students with a PBT TOEFL score of over 500. The course mainly discusses how to do business presentation appropriately. Students of this course conduct several business presentations. Each week they are prepared with topics that will enhance their presentation skills, such as structure of presentation, useful words and phrases in business presentation, visual aids for presentation and effective strategies in business presentation. Students are expected to apply the knowledge they have gained in the class when doing the presentation. However, it has been noticed that students may implement different rhetorical devices when doing business presentation. Based on those discussions, this research will mainly focus on the following problem formulation: 1. Which of the SCREAM rhetorical devices is used by the EBP students when doing a business presentation? 2. Which of the persuasive ways appears more appealing to the audience when the EBP students do their presentation? 3. Does gender play a role in the way the EBP students (as a presenter) persuade the audience? The significance of the research is as follows: 1. To contribute information for practitioners in the field of English for Business Presentation including: a. Curriculum designers and Material Developers, in developing relevant curriculum, syllabus, and materials b. Implementers, including lecturers, teachers, and instructors, in delivering teaching, trainings, and guidance directly or indirectly to their students 2. To help students gain better understanding of the subject of English for Business Presentation. The research sample or subjects in this study are 16 students of English for Business Presentation (EBP) Class at Binus University, in the academic year of 2016/ 2017. The subjects will be chosen randomly. The data used was particularly obtained from primary data based on surveys by using two kinds of questionnaire. The first is using SCREAM rhetorical devices by Windingland (2012). The first questionnaire is used to know about which strategy of SCREAM that the students mostly used in their persuasive presentation based on their gender. There are six items to be answered. The second questionnaire is using three ways of persuasive presentation by Nguyen, et. al. (2013). The questionnaire was also utilized in order to find out the most persuasive ways used by the presenters based on their gender. There are two questions to be answered. All questionnaires will use Likert scale in the form of open ended question (yes or no).
