Title

BUILDING SOCIAL READINESS AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMMUNICATION AGAINST DISASTER RISK IN VOLCANIC AREAS

Abstract
Especially Indonesia, Southeast Asia is one of the countries covered by a series of world volcanoes in the Pacific region. One of the volcanoes in Indonesia is Mount Krakatau, which has erupted several times. Simultaneously, the population in the Krakatau region is relatively dense, and the Republic of Indonesia's capital is near Mount Krakatau. Various studies have been carried out from an engineering perspective to reduce disasters' impact; However, social research and humanities are minimal. The study we have undertaken seeks to meet previous studies' shortcomings, especially from a social, communication, and technological perspective. The purpose of this study was to analyze various variables that determine the level of social readiness and environmental communication in the face of volcano and tsunami disasters. This study also aims to find essential factors that influence residents' preparedness in facing earthquake and tsunami disasters. The mixed-methods methodology was adopted to integrate ethnography and surveying in qualitative and quantitative data collection. The various variables that would be tested required a deepening of the observations on people's daily lives in the volcanic region. Hypotheses will be tested against several variables that affect social readiness, such as Traditional Technology, Modern Technology, Social Learning, School Learning, Public Policy, Government Experience, and Citizen Experience. Furthermore, data processing would be done by using a structural equation model (SEM). Meanwhile, some of the qualitative data from observations and interviews were processed using NVivo to find depths that complement the survey results. The questionnaire is structured based on explaining concepts and variables and is equipped with open-ended questions for interviews in the field. The research samples will be taken in various subdistrict cities along the coast of Banten Province and the Lampung province coast. There are as many as 12 subdistricts with 30 respondents each for 360 people. Interviews were conducted with residents in each city so that the total number of participants was 36 people. This study will present a readiness policy model and provide recommendations to the public, local government, and central government in Indonesia. Several international papers will also be published in reputable journals indexed by Scopus.
