Penggunaan Bahasa Inggris di Iklan di Jakarta

Abstract
English has been used as an international language and in Indonesia, educated people and people in general struggle to use it with their own knowledge, style and understanding. The use of real English i.e. the use of English in Indonesian society is increasing. This use can be seen in the education institutions, advertisements, headlines, brochures until the street sellers. The phrase lift passangers found in the lift one of the universities and snake replacing snack in front of a shop shows that the society is aware of the importance of English. The research intends to analyze the use of real English found in the society in order to check whether the English used follows the English standard and whether the message of the writings can be understood by the people as well as the possible causes. The data were taken from 20 writings consisting of advertisements, boards, notices from the public places. The data was analyzed qualitatively from the phonology, vocabulary, semantics and pragmatic points of views. The results shows that the non standard use of real English are in spelling, vocabulary, word choice, grammar. The causes are the influence of Indonesian or the local language, lack of vocabulary, the use of Indonesian grammar, the writing of words based on what are heard. Semantically and pragmatically, some expressions can be accepted and some cannot. Some others cannot be understood at all if there is no Indonesian equivalence. The results can be used by the lecturers as the input to design the curriculum of English for society as their community service.
