Transforming Plastic Waste into Sustainable Lego-Shaped Bricks

The Lego-Shaped Plastic Brick project is a powerful example of how engineering can lead the way in solving complex environmental challenges. By recycling and repurposing plastic waste into a valuable building material, this innovation not only reduces pollution but also conserves precious natural resources. The mastermind behind this innovation is Ir. Tota Pirdo Kasih, M.Eng., Ph.D., IPM., the Head of the Professional Engineer Program at Binus University. Lego-Shaped Plastic Bricks was one of the research products that caught the attention at Binus Engineering Week 2023.

The event welcomed distinguished guests, including Prof. Dr. (HC). Dahlan Iskan, the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia (2011-2014) and Founder of E-T-Trans, and Dr. Milton P., M.M., CERG., President Commissioner of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga and Founder of E-Trans. Binus University’s Vice Rector for Academic Development, Prof. Dr. Engkos Achmad Kuncoro, M.M., and Vice Rector for Academic Operation & Resources, Dr. Reina, S.Kom., M.M., played a vital role in liaising with the event’s organizers and visitors. The centerpiece of this event was undoubtedly the Lego-Shaped Plastic Bricks. This remarkable innovation is a testament to the power of engineering in addressing environmental concerns, especially in the context of the circular economy.

One notable feature of these Lego-Shaped Plastic Bricks is their remarkable durability – these bricks remain intact even when dropped from heights of 1-2 meters. Moreover, they exhibit an exceptional ability to resist water absorption, absorbing only 2% of moisture, compared to the 20% absorption rate of traditional bricks. This characteristic makes them exceptionally resilient to humidity, ensuring they do not easily become brittle. The innovation does not stop at the bricks themselves. They can be effortlessly moulded into Lego-shaped bricks, roof tiles, and even fences, offering a versatile array of applications in construction and design.
