Public Education for Enhancing Democratic Competence: Insights from the AIPI Cultural Commission Hybrid Discussion

Pada 23 Mei 2025, Komisi Kebudayaan AIPI mengadakan Diskusi Terpumpun Hibrida bertema Pendidikan Publik untuk Membangun Kompetensi Warga dalam Berdemokrasi di BINUS University. Narasumber dari berbagai bidang akademik dan kebijakan membahas peran pendidikan publik dalam mengembangkan kompetensi demokrasi warga dengan pendekatan lintas disiplin dan konteks budaya di Indonesia

On May 23, 2025, the Cultural Commission of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI) held a focused hybrid discussion titled Public Education for Building Citizens’ Democratic Competence at the Faculty Lounge, BINUS University, Anggrek Campus. The event was officially opened by Prof. Daniel Murdiyarso, Ph.D., Chair of AIPI, and concluded by Prof. M. Amin Abdullah, Ph.D., Chair of the Cultural Commission. The session was moderated by Prof. Melani Budianta, Ph.D., a member of the Commission.

The discussion featured prominent speakers from diverse academic and institutional backgrounds. J. Haryatmoko, S.J., Ph.D., represented the AIPI Cultural Commission; Anindito Aditomo, Ph.D., former Head of BSKAP (2020–2024), presented insights from his educational policy experience; and Prof. Dr. Shidarta, S.H., M.Hum., contributed perspectives from legal philosophy at BINUS University. Further contributions came from Zita Wahyu Larasati, S.Sos., M.A. of Universitas Gadjah Mada, and Prof. Anita Lie, M.A., Ed.D. of Widya Mandala Catholic University, who offered interdisciplinary viewpoints on democratic education.

Among the participants was Prof. Dr. Juneman Abraham, S.Psi., Vice Rector of Research and Technology Transfer at BINUS University, whose presence underscored the university’s commitment to fostering academic dialogue on democratic engagement. The event provided a platform for exploring how public education can be harnessed to cultivate democratic competencies, emphasizing the interplay between culture, education, and citizenship in Indonesia’s evolving democratic landscape.
