Advancing Open Science in Indonesia: A Coordinated Effort Among Key Stakeholders

The Coordination Meeting on Open Science Development, held online on February 24, 2025, was organized by the Director of Repository, Multimedia, and Scientific Publishing. This meeting aligned with UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science, emphasizing global understanding of its meaning, opportunities, and challenges. As the designated focal point for Open Science in Indonesia, BRIN is responsible for reporting the national implementation of these recommendations. The meeting was officially opened by Hendro Subagyo, M.Eng., Head of the BRIN Data and Information Center (CIO BRIN), and brought together key stakeholders from various institutions to discuss strategies for advancing Open Science practices in Indonesia.

Among the distinguished participants was Prof. Dr. Juneman Abraham, Vice Rector for Research and Technology Transfer at BINUS University, accompanied by his team. His presence underscored BINUS University’s commitment to fostering Open Science, particularly through its scholarly publishing and research initiatives. As a leading institution in research and technology transfer, BINUS plays a crucial role in integrating Open Science principles within academia and promoting accessible and transparent research outputs. The meeting featured Mardiareni Sulaiman, Ph.D., Research Data Librarian at BRIN Indonesia, and Cahyo Trianggoro, S.IP., Human Computer Interaction and Visualization expert at BRIN, as speakers. Their presentations highlighted critical aspects of research data management, data visualization, and Open Science infrastructure.

The meeting also included representatives from BRIN, LPDP, the Indonesian University Library Forum, Creative Commons Indonesia, Wikimedia-GLAM Indonesia, and the Society of Indonesian Science Journalists, along with universities actively engaged in Open Science. Discussions covered research data management, public access to scientific knowledge, and interdisciplinary collaboration. By engaging a diverse range of stakeholders, the meeting sought to enhance national strategies for Open Science implementation in accordance with UNESCO’s global framework.
