Re-Fragmentation of The Memory: A Harmonious Blend of Heritage and Modernity at Jakarta Architecture Festival 2024
The Jakarta Architecture Festival 2024, themed Reclaiming Identities, showcases innovative architectural works from November 9 to 24, 2024. Among the highlighted pieces is the project titled Re-Fragmentation of The Memory, created by Ar. Yanita Mila Ardiani, M.T., IAI, a Faculty Member at BINUS University, alongside Muhammad Raid Afnan Hanif and Muhammad Firas Nayottama, both Architecture students at BINUS University. This project stems from Mrs. Yanita’s research, which was published under the title Insertion: Menambah tanpa Merobohkan, and was recognized as one of the top 20 submissions in a design competition focused on low-cost housing in Kota Tua Jakarta.
The concept of this project is grounded in the architectural theory of insertion, emphasizing the principle of adding without demolishing. The design follows a Compatible Contrast style, articulated through the formula 1’/A3/B’’’. In this approach, the new structure is intentionally larger than the existing heritage building (1’), while a lower plaza (A3) is introduced to reveal the original building’s foundational structure. The old and new structures are interconnected through this sunken plaza (B’’’), creating a cohesive yet dynamic spatial relationship that honors the historical context.
This architectural approach not only preserves the integrity of heritage sites but also enriches them by integrating modern elements, fostering a dialogue between the past and present. The project exemplifies how adaptive reuse can be achieved in urban conservation, aligning with the festival’s broader theme of reclaiming and redefining cultural identities within the urban fabric.
