Exploring Media: Insights into Journalism and Documentary Filmmaking at BINUS University

On May 17, 2024, BINUS University, in collaboration with DAAI TV, organized a workshop titled “Exploring Media: Navigating the World of Journalism and News Reporting” at the Anggrek Campus Auditorium in Jakarta. The event was attended by esteemed individuals, including Dr. Jureynolds, SS., M.Litt., Head of Chinese Literature Department, Arthanami Ekakrisima, S.S., M.Si., Head of Internationalization & Partnership Program, Prof. Dr. Juneman Abraham, M.Si., Vice Rector of Research and Technology Transfer at BINUS University, and several prominent faculty members from the Chinese Literature department. The workshop aimed to provide students and faculty with insights into the field of journalism and documentary filmmaking.

The workshop featured presentations by key speakers from DAAI TV Jakarta: Muliadi Senjaya, Dio Mairizki, and Candra Jap. Muliadi Senjaya initiated the session by discussing the production process of the documentary film “Nyala Toleransi Bagansiapiapi,” which is part of DAAI TV’s “Jelajah Budaya Tionghoa” program. He emphasized the essence of documentary filmmaking, quoting John Grierson’s notion of documentaries as a “creative treatment of actuality” and Timothy Corrigan’s definition of documentaries as non-fiction films that depict real events and people, often without a traditional narrative structure. Muliadi highlighted that documentaries focus on reality and genuine occurrences.

Following Muliadi, Dio Mairizki delved into the technical aspects of capturing visuals for the documentary, providing practical insights into the visual storytelling process. Candra Jap concluded the workshop with a discussion on tolerance and cultural diversity, specifically in the Bagansiapiapi community. On the second session of the workshop, participants were provided by tips on how to dub and read news in mandarin and let the participants to practice the tips. Binus Chinese literature student, Elvina, once won 1st place in a news reading competition in Mandarin. The event not only showcased the collaborative efforts between BINUS University and DAAI TV but also enriched the participants’ understanding of the critical role of media in portraying cultural diversity and promoting tolerance in society.
