BINUS University Receives Plant Variety Protection for Innovative Keladi Tikus Plant Biotechnology
On April 2, 2024, at the Malyabhara Hotel in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the Center for Plant Variety Protection and Agricultural Licensing, under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia, granted Plant Variety Protection (PVP) rights to BINUS University and plant biotechnologists Dr. Nesti Sianipar, M.Sc., from the Food and Biotechnology Research Center at BINUS University, and Dr. Ragapadmi Purnamaningsih, M.Sc., from the Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development Center. The awarded variety, named Binusantara 1, belongs to the Typhonium flagelliforme species, commonly known as “Keladi Tikus”. This PVP right provides protection for twenty years from the date of issuance.
Binusantara 1 represents a significant achievement in plant biotechnology, particularly in the cultivation of Typhonium flagelliforme. This plant species holds cultural and medicinal importance in Indonesia, known for its traditional uses and potential pharmacological properties. The granting of PVP rights underscores the recognition of the innovative work conducted by BINUS University and its researchers, acknowledging their contributions to agricultural science and biodiversity conservation.
The collaboration between academia and government institutions in advancing agricultural research and development is vital for promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing food security. By granting PVP rights to Binusantara 1, the Indonesian government aims to incentivize further research and investment in plant biotechnology, while also safeguarding the intellectual property of local innovations. This achievement reflects Indonesia’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the growth of its agricultural sector through strategic partnerships and regulatory frameworks.
