Navigating Authorship and Acknowledgment in Academic Writing: Integrating AI Responsibly

Starting from 2024, VR RTT BINUS University implements the obligation of Open Contributorship (where every author must specify “Who did what” in a research project and scholarly writing) to all of its faculty members as part of efforts to prevent and eradicate fabrication and falsification. In the realm of academic writing, the proper attribution of authorship holds significant importance. Adhering to a set of stringent criteria ensures that those who contribute substantially to the conceptualization, execution, and validation of research are duly recognized. The criteria delineate the roles authors play, from conceptualization and resource provision to data curation and manuscript drafting. Moreover, authors must collectively determine the sequence of authorship based on their respective contributions, fostering transparency and accountability within the research community.

Acknowledging contributors who may not meet the criteria for authorship is equally crucial. While they may not fulfil all the mandatory authorship criteria, their support, whether through funding acquisition, mentorship, or minor editing, warrants recognition. The acknowledgment section serves as a platform to express gratitude to individuals who have contributed in various capacities, enriching the research process and outcomes. Such acknowledgment fosters a culture of inclusivity and appreciation within scholarly endeavours.

The integration of AI technologies into academic writing introduces a new dimension of authorship considerations.
