2023 Grants for research on the Asia-Oceania region

The Asia-Oceania region, where about 60% of the world’s people live, has abundant nature, and has cultivated its own deep history and culture. In addition, the rapid economic growth in recent years, has brought gross domestic product (GDP) to one-third of the world’s total, further increasing its presence in the international community. On the other hand, in Japan, economic growth is stagnant due to social maturity and population decline, and it is required to deepen mutual understanding with the region and cooperate more closely for the future. Our foundation was established in 1989 by the Resona Bank with the aim of contributing to the peace and prosperity of the Asia-Oceania region and the building of friendly relations between the region with Japan. Since its establishment, we have continued to support young researchers studying the Asia-Oceania region. So far, we have provided a total of 620 million yen to about 380 people and have produced many area studies specialists. The seminars concerned about oversea or Asia business development and environmental issues, supported by everyone, have held 50 times over. The supports for environmental conservation projects in the Asia-Oceania region is kinds of SDGs’ activity, have taken 38 projects until now, have provided a total of 100 million yen over. Now the world is having many deeply problems and actively discussed about social remaking and the rules of international cooperation. We will strive to strengthen cooperation much more with the Asia-Oceania region through exchange programs in the three areas academic (humanities and social sciences), economic, and environmental conservation, while responding to changes in the times. We look forward to your kindness, support, and guidance.

In order to contribute to improving mutual understanding between Japan and countries and regions in Asia and Oceania, we will support for research activities in the social sciences and humanities (social, culture, history, politics, economics, etc.) related to Asian and Oceanian countries and regions. Specifically, we are implementing the following three programs.

  1. Research Project Grants: We will support those who research and study in the above research fields. We will focus on young researchers (those under the age of 40) who cannot obtain support from the government, public institutions, and general companies.
  2. International Academic Exchange Grants: In the same research field, we will support international conferences, symposiums, seminars, and human resource exchanges for the purpose of international academic exchange.
  3. Publication Grants: In the same research field, we will support the publication of research results.

In order to protect the natural environment in Asia and Oceania regions, we will provide a grant (Resona Environmental Grant) to those who engage in small-scale environmental projects working with local people. We hope that this grant, which seeks the connection between nature and people, will spread to more regions and contribute to solving environmental problems in the region.
