Abstract

Data mining is used to obtain patterns that can represent information or knowledge from a big number of data. Eventhough the main application is to extract information from business transactions data, a lot of researchers also use it for other types of data. The process results in various forms of patterns but the most important is to determine the patterns that are interesting and contain useful information. Interesting patterns are defined based on individual or related entities understanding, potential usefulness validity of information and sometimes scientific hypothesis. Subjective measures are also being used especially if considered accepted generally as complying to certain rules. The different pattern is interesting for further analysis. Data mining for technical data is interesting as the data follows format and procedures that are generally standardized. Data mining application to firewall is an interesting application as firewall is a device that maintains the security of a corporate network from malware. Firewall functions according to the rules that are determined by the network manager. It stores data resulted from its work in a logfile. This paper discusses the research of Golnabi et al.in using data mining to obtain information from a logfile which can be used to improve the operations of firewall by adjusting the rules according to the result through data mining
