NVIDIA DLI Workshop with Universitas Jenderal Soedirman Faculty of Marine and Fisheries

The NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute (DLI) Ambassador Workshop continues. This time, the onsite workshop lasts two days from 9 to 10 November 2024 at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences. The workshop is instructed by Ir. Kuncahyo Setyo Nugroho and Mahmud Isnan, certified instructors from NVIDIA in Fundamentals of Deep Learning, who also serve as research assistants in BDSRC|AIRDC. Thirty lecturers from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences attend the workshop.

The first day of the workshop focuses on the basics of AI, especially computer vision (CV). Before the workshop begins, there is an opening speech from Prof. Dr. Endang Hilmi and Prof. Dr. Bens Pardamean. Prof. Dr. Endang Hilmi, the dean of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, stated AI’s importance in driving novelties in science, especially in marine and fisheries. Prof. Dr. Bens Pardamean, the head of BDSRC, also noted in his opening speech the importance of AI nowadays as a priority for optimal research. The workshop continues into two sessions, with the first session topic revolving around the foundations of AI and CV, followed by the second session, which revolves around Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Transfer Learning. The workshop ends with the participants undertaking the official assessment from NVIDIA.

The second day of the workshop dives deeper into the hands-on experience of AI implementation in marine and fisheries. The workshop starts with an explanation of the data collection best practices for vision AI in marine and fisheries. It then continues into the hands-on experience, including salmon disease classification and fish fry object detection. The workshop ends with a proof-of-concept discussion for further AI research collaboration, including fish/shrimp morphometry detection, phytoplankton detection, fish behavior detection through bioacoustics signals, and many others. The event ends well, with a grateful remark from the participants, since this is the first time the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences lecturers from Universitas Jenderal Soedirman have such an opportunity to receive world-certified training directly from NVIDIA.
