At the Intersection of AI and Semiconductors: A Multidisciplinary Collaboration Approach

BDSRC collaborated with the Electrical Engineering Department at Trisakti University and hosted a Visiting Professor event. The event lasted four days, from 29 July 2024 until 1 August 2024. The invited professors are Dr. Derrick Speaks and Dr. Rachel Speaks from Arizona State University and Oregon Institute of Technology. During these four days, both professors shared their current research and knowledge in semiconductors and material science. The event culminates with a discussion with Prof. Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro from the Ministry of Maritime and Investment on 5th August 2024 regarding future potential collaborations in accelerating Indonesia’s technology and engineering. A memorandum of consortium (MoC) was signed on the same day between Binus University, Trisakti University, Arizona State University, and Oregon Institute of Technology.

On 29 July 2024, the discussions centered around defects and doping in semiconductors and the possibility of AI utilization in the field. The event started with Derrick’s detailed seminar titled Linking AI and Semiconductors: Design, Doping, Defect, and Failure Modes. Rachel then proceeded with her presentation titled Fabrication Processes for Superconductor and Semiconductor Devices. Then, the discussion continues toward Crack Catcher AI, the research collaboration initiated by Dr. Arief Suriadi Budiman from BINUS Industrial Engineering, Derrick, and Dr. Endang Djuana from Trisakti University Electrical Engineering. All the events were held on the BINUS Anggrek campus.

On 30 July 2024, the event was held at Trisakti University. The event started with some welcome remarks from critical figures of Trisakti University, namely Prof. Dr. Ir. Rianti Dewi Sulamet Ariobimo as the Dean of Industrial Engineering Faculty, and Dr. Endang Djuana as the Leader of the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology. Following the remarks, Derrick gave a seminar in the Introduction to Semiconductor and Future Projects and Thin Film Physics and the Role of Combinatorial Material Science. The seminar then continued with Rachel discussing the Principles and Applications of Additive Manufacturing.

On 31 July 2024, Derrick and Rachel continued sharing their knowledge. On this day, they discussed the utilization of materials as a novelty in creating properties. Derrick brought his presentation titled Using 1D and 2D Materials: Graphene, Nanotubes, and Nanoparticles to Create Novel Optical and Electrical Properties. Rachel continues by giving her presentation titled Additive Manufacturing as a Disruptive Technology. The event was held in BINUS ASO, and representatives from BINUS ASO were invited as well. Later in the event, a discussion regarding novel research ideas in mechano-bactericidal action in nanostructured surfaces was held. The basic idea of this novelty is to exterminate bacteria in a nanostructured surface mechanically using the spring-back capability. Dr. Arief Suriadi Budiman  from BINUS Industrial Engineering, led this later discussion.

On 1 August 2024, the discussion continued on the applicative level. Derrick gave a presentation about Next Generation Applications of Semiconductors. This talk showcased several projects and ideas for developing semiconductors, such as for more efficient solar cells and as an antimicrobial material. Rachel then continued the discussion through her Clean Energy: Novel Materials Coating for Wind Turbine Blades Protection and Deicing presentation. Both of these talks give a future direction for developing materials across different fields of science.

On 5 August 2024, a discussion was held between the Academicians and Prof. Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro as the adviser of the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs. The Academicians are represented by Prof. Dr. Bens Pardamean from BDSRC, Dr. Arief Suriadi Budiman from BINUS Industrial Engineering, Dr. Endang Djuana from Trisakti University Electrical Engineering, Dr. Derrick Speaks from Arizona State University, and Dr. Rachel Speaks from Oregon Institute of Technology. The discussion examined the potential collaboration between Indonesia’s Government and Academics in accelerating AI, nanomaterial science, and biomedical research. After the discussion, the representing academics signed a Memorandum of Consortium (MoC) between BINUS, Trisakti University, Arizona State University, and Oregon Institute of Technology. The establishment of this consortium of academia, named Global Research Alliance on Biomedical Advanced Nanotechnology (BioMed x Nano), symbolizes a long-lasting and synergic multidisciplinary collaboration in future cutting-edge research in AI, nanomaterial science, and biomedic.
