The Food Biotechnology Research Center (FBRC), led by Prof. Dr. Nesti F. Sianipar, has proudly secured First Place in the BINUS Innovation Award 2025 with the project titled:

“Superior Torpedo Banana as a Functional Low-Gluten and Low-Glycemic Food Ingredient for the Elderly.”

The innovation was reviewed by BINUS CEO Ir. Bernard Gunawan, BINUS Rector Dr. Nelly, S.Kom., M.M., CSCA, and the BINUS Foundation Board, who unanimously recognized FBRC’s outstanding contribution to sustainable and health-focused food biotechnology.

A Breakthrough in Banana Biotechnology

The Torpedo Banana (Pisang Torpedo) is a mutant of Horn banana (pisang tanduk) developed through plant tissue culture biotechnology with the addition of BAP (6-Benzylaminopurine).
Importantly, this product is not a GMO and is safe for consumption.

This superior banana exhibits an ideal nutritional profile, particularly its high potassium content, making it an excellent raw ingredient for high-value functional foods, such as low-gluten cookies designed for the elderly.

Protected and Collaborative Innovation

Torpedo Banana has already obtained Plant Variety Protection (PVT) from the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture.
The project also involves extensive collaboration with multiple partners, including:

  • BINUS Hospitality & Tourism
  • Ryukyu University (Japan)
  • Diponegoro University – Department of Nutrition

Key Advantages of Torpedo Banana

  • Larger fruit size compared to conventional varieties
  • Naturally sweet and rich flavor
  • High nutritional value
  • Suitable for diverse food applications
  • Developed through safe and ethical biotechnology methods

FBRC’s achievement reflects BINUS University’s commitment to fostering innovation, sustainability, and impactful research for the betterment of society. Congratulations to Prof. Nesti and the entire FBRC team!
