On 1 July 2026, the Food Biotechnology Research Center (FBRC) participated in the 45th Lustrum Anniversary Exhibition of BINUS University, presenting a range of research innovations that demonstrate the center’s commitment to advancing biotechnology, functional foods, and Indonesia’s valuable plant genetic resources.

One of the featured innovations was a rodent tuber (Typhonium flagelliforme) extract supplement capsule, developed through a research collaboration between FBRC and PT ASIMAS. The supplement represents an important step in translating scientific discoveries into value-added health products with commercialization potential, while promoting the utilization of Indonesia’s medicinal plants through evidence-based research.

FBRC also introduced the Torpedo banana, a superior banana variety with desirable agronomic and fruit quality characteristics, highlighting its potential for cultivation, food diversification, and future development as a high-value horticultural commodity.

In addition, visitors were introduced to in vitro cultured Thorn Apple (Datura metel) plants, produced using plant tissue culture technology. This research supports the sustainable propagation of Datura while providing a reliable source of valuable bioactive compounds. Thorn apple contains naturally occurring tropane alkaloids, such as scopolamine and atropine, which serve as important pharmaceutical precursors for anesthetic and antispasmodic applications. Through tissue culture, FBRC aims to support the conservation, standardized production, and future pharmaceutical utilization of this medicinal plant.

The FBRC exhibition booth attracted the attention of several distinguished guests, including BINUS University Rector Dr. Nelly, S.Kom., M.M., CSCA., Brawijaya University Rector Prof. Widodo, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D.Med.Sc., George Wijaya Hadipoespito, M.Sc., MBA, and representatives from BPK PENABUR Christian Schools. During their visit, they explored FBRC’s featured innovations and exchanged ideas with the research team on the scientific advancements and their potential contributions to healthcare, agriculture, and the biotechnology industry.
