On April 2, 2024, Food Biotechnology Research Center, Binus University, receives Plant Variety Protection (PVP) rights for rodent tuber variety from  the Ministry of Agriculture Republic Indonesia. This variety was invented by plant biotechnologists, Dr. Nesti F. Sianipar, M.Si., Head of Food Biotechnology Research Center, Binus University and Dr. Ragapadmi Purnamaningsih, M.Si., from the Agricultural Biotechnology and Genetic Resources Research and Development Center. The awarded variety named Binusantara1, with the certificate number 00713/PPVT/S/2024 (annual plant). This PVP right provides protection for twenty years from the date of issuance.

Binusantara 1 represents a significant achievement in plant biotechnology, particulary in the cultivation of Typhonium flagelliforme, commonly known as Keladi Tikus. This plant species holds cultural and medicinal importance in Indonesia, known for its traditional uses and potential pharmacological properties. The granting of PVP rights underscores the recognition of the innovative work conducted by BINUS University and its researchers, acknowledging their contributions to agricultural science and biodiversity conservation.

The collaboration beetwen academia and government institutions in advancing agricultural research and development is vital for promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing food security. By granting PVP rights to Binusantara 1, the Indonesian government aims to incentivize further research and investment in plant biotechnology, while also safeguarding the intellectual property of local innovations. This achievement reflects Indonesia’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the growth of its agricultural sector throught strategic partnerships and regulatory frameworks.
