Prof. Dr. Bens Pardamean
Director

Prof. Dr. Bens Pardamean has over thirty years of global experience in information technology, bioinformatics, and education, including a strong background in database systems, computer networks, and quantitative research. His professional experience includes being a practitioner, researcher, consultant, entrepreneur, and lecturer. His current research interests are in developing and analyzing genetic data in cancer studies and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for agriculture genetic research. After successfully leading the Bioinformatics Research Interest Group, he currently holds a dual appointment as the Director of the Bioinformatics & Data Science Research Center (BDSRC) and as a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Bina Nusantara (BINUS) in Jakarta, Indonesia. He earned a doctoral degree in informative research from the University of Southern California (USC), as well as a master’s degree in computer education and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from California State University, Los Angeles.

Andrea Stevens Karnyoto, Ph.D.
Senior Researcher

Andrea earned his Bachelor’s degree from STMIK Dipanegara, a Master’s degree from Hasanuddin University, and a Ph.D. from Harbin Institute of Technology. His Ph.D. studies focused on natural language processing, including Large Language Modeling (LLM), the latest transformers architecture, topic-based methods, and graph neural networks. Aside from working in Artificial Intelligence (AI), he has a web and desktop programming background. During his career in computer science, he created many information systems for various organizations. In addition, he has received two grants for research and two for community service from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

Arif Budiarto, S.Kom., M.Sc.
Research Associate

Arif Budiarto is a technology enthusiast. He has work experience ranging from system implementer to UX researcher at several IT companies. He also had a great opportunity to join the summer internship program at the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) as a business and technology analyst. His expertise areas include the Internet of Things (IoT) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). His current research interest is how to design from, with, and by data. He aims to combine his expertise in IoT with the advantage of data science to solve multidisciplinary real-life problems. He previously studied computer science at Bina Nusantara University for his bachelor’s degree and earned an MSc with distinction in Advanced Design Informatics at the University of Edinburgh.

Alam Ahmad Hidayat, S.Si., M.Sc.
Research Assistant

Alam has experience in Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as applied statistics, including biostatistics. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Institut Teknologi Bandung, specializing in theoretical physics. Later, Alam earned a master’s degree in physics from the University of Bonn and developed an interest in data analysis through his final project that explores the use of Bayesian analysis to analyze data in hadron physics. Currently, his main interest is in the application of deep learning (neural networks) in various tasks that include sound and image recognition and analyzing biological data. Furthermore, he is also actively participating with all bioinformatics projects in BDSRC to help in statistical data analysis.

Rudi Nirwantono, S.Si., M.Mol.Bio.
Research Assistant

Rudi Nirwantono is a molecular biology and genetics enthusiast. He is highly interested in the genetics and molecular aspects of communicable diseases, especially Arthropod-borne diseases. His working experiences include genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics research at private and government institutions. He has expertise ranging from genetics recombination, protein heterologous overexpression, real-time PCR, sequence analysis, protein modeling, and protein docking. He previously studied biology at Universitas Gadjah Mada for his bachelor’s degree and earned an M.Sc. with first-class honors in Molecular Biology at the University of Queensland.

Mahmud Isnan, S.Kom., M.Eng.

Mahmud received a Bachelor of Computer Science in Information Systems from STMIK Indonesia Padang, Indonesia. He earned a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and the Internet of Things from a joint degree program between the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University (TU) under the TAIST Tokyo Tech Program. In his thesis, he worked on mapping poverty using machine learning, satellite imagery, and geospatial data. His recent research interests include remote sensing, machine learning, image processing, and natural language processing. Currently, he joined BDSRC to work on AI research, especially in image processing and remote sensing.

Kuncahyo Setyo Nugroho obtained a Professional Engineer (Ir.) in Informatics Engineering from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember Indonesia, a Bachelor of Computer Science (S.Kom) in Software Engineering from Universitas Widya Gama Indonesia, and a Master of Computer Science (M.Kom) in Intelligent System from Universitas Brawijaya Indonesia. His expertise extends to affective computing, particularly in deciphering human emotion within textual data, merging the realms of artificial intelligence and natural language processing.

Matthew earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science from IPB University. He has an interest in data science and machine learning since his third semester at campus. Christian has experience in both wet- and dry-laboratory experiments during his undergraduate study at the Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, specializing in biotechnology. Teddy Suparyanto has a deep understanding of developing and managing IT systems in the educational and agro-industry sectors. He currently holds an appointment as a Research Associate at Bioinformatics & Data Science Research Center (BDSRC) | AI Research & Development Center (AIRDC) and as a Lecturer of agricultural informatics engineering at STIPER Agricultural University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Graduated from the mathematics teacher education faculty, he has an educational background in mathematics, teaching skills, educational psychology, pedagogy philosophy, teaching strategy, and learning media. James W. Baurley, Ph.D.
Research Consultant

Dr. James W. Baurley has ten years of experience developing software for data-intensive applications. His current research interests and expertise are in developing computational methods to investigate the interplay of genetic and environmental factors in complex diseases, such as nicotine dependence, asthma, and cancer. Previously, he was a computer scientist at the University of Southern California, where he developed computational and statistical methods applicable to genome-wide data and investigated the role of genes in childhood asthma. He earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Clemson University, as well as a master’s degree in biostatistics and a Ph.D. in statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology from the University of Southern California. He currently is an adjunct faculty and bioinformatics research consultant at Bina Nusantara (BINUS) University and co-founder and principal data scientist at BioRealm LLC, a US-based research group developing a suite of tools that support the genetic understanding of, and treatments for health issues.

Christopher McMahan, Ph.D.

Dr. Christopher McMahan is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University. He completed his Bachelor’s degree majoring in mathematics, and minoring in physics, at Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, TN. He then earned a master’s degree in mathematics at Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Kentucky. He then completed a doctoral degree in statistics at the University of South Carolina, Columbia, SC. After completing his Ph.D., he joined Clemson University as an assistant professor, and he was recently promoted to the rank of associate. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also consults with Biorealm and serves as a Visiting Professor at BINUS University. His research interests include but are not limited to, categorical data analysis, group testing, survival data analysis, nonparametric methods, measurement error models, Spatio-temporal modeling, statistical computing, Bayesian parametric/nonparametric estimation, high dimensional regression techniques, epidemiology/public health, and biomedical applications.

Carissa I. Pardamean, B.Sc., B.A., M.Sc., Ph.D. 
Computational Geneticist

Carissa Pardamean has experience in both laboratory work and retrospective clinical research. Her research as an undergraduate utilizes yeast experimental genetics techniques to decipher the genetic basis of neural tube defect and the mechanism of folate supplementation in neural tube defect prevention. Her most recent project investigates provider practices’ efficiency in managing thyroid disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Her primary research interest involves finding the cause and treatment method for complex diseases based on their genetic genesis. She is currently an associate researcher at BioRealm Research and Harvard University’s Longwood Medical Area − particularly at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is also a computational geneticist and scientific manuscript editor for Bina Nusantara University. She earned a master’s of science degree in biomedical sciences from Boston University, as well as a double bachelor’s degree in molecular & cell biology (genetics emphasis) and linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in medical and molecular pharmacology.

Rezzy Eko Caraka, S.Si., M.Sc., Ph.D.

Obtained bachelor, master, and Ph.D. degrees from Universitas Diponegoro, The National University of Malaysia, and Chaoyang University in 2011,2018, and 2021, respectively. During the completion of Doctoral study, Rezzy Eko Caraka received Excellent Research Awards from the President of CYUT (2019 and 2020) due to outstanding performance in Ph.D. research. In September 2020, He started the Post-Doctoral (Researcher) in Research for Basic Sciences, Lab Hierarchical Likelihood, at the Department of Statistics, Seoul National University. He was honored with numerous awards including the best paper of FREKS 2019 awarded by the Ministry of Finance Indonesia, and the Financial Services Authority. Currently, He has authored more than 30 peer-reviewed papers and holds 2 copyright. At the same time, He already published more than 10 statistics books including Geographically Weighted Regression, Spatial Data Panel, Introduction of GLM by using R, and Advanced Bioinformatics by using R. He also co-founded STATCAL (www.statcal.com). His research interests include but are not limited to, Statistics Geospatial, Bioinformatics, Statistics Ecological Biodiversity, and H-Likelihood. He passed technical training in intermediate-level data science by Deep Learning Institute NVIDIA and Bioinformatics BioREALM USA.

Dr. Dedy Ariansyah S.T., M.T.

Dr Dedy Ariansyah worked previously as a Research Fellow at Cranfield University under the EPSRC-funded project DigiTOP where his research focused on: (1) how immersive technologies like Augmented Reality can improve industrial productivity and (2) Digital Twin development to support decision-making. He is currently involved in the AI research team where he focuses on the embedded AI in immersive technologies and knowledge capture to improve task productivity, increase the efficiency of knowledge transfer, and data-driven process optimization. Dedy’s Ph.D. was focused on the Virtual Reality Driving simulator for driver behavior analysis where he developed and integrated physiological data and driving performance to study different human cognitive operations when interacting with driver assistance systems.

Joko has experience in laboratory work as he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the School of Life Sciences, Institut Teknologi Bandung. Then, Joko obtained his Ph.D. from the Life Sciences Department, Imperial College London, UK. His research focuses on biochemistry and biotechnology. After finishing his Ph.D., Joko worked as a Research Associate at Imperial College London. Here, he was involved in the research on comparative genomics in Cyanobacteria. This has escalated his interest in Bioinformatics, especially in genomics research.

Hery H. Mulyo has more than 22 years of experience as a lecturer and 8 years in research. His research expertise is in developing management information systems (MIS) for health institutions such as hospitals and clinics. His other roles for the Research Center are in establishing collaborations, drafting and creating contracts, and managing financial administration. He has obtained various grants such as competition grants, foreign collaboration and international publications grants, and national strategic grants from DIKTI. Tjeng Wawan Cenggoro is an AI researcher whose focus is on the development of Deep Learning algorithms for applications in Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, and Bioinformatics. He has led several research projects that utilize Deep Learning for Computer Vision, which is applied to many cases such as indoor video analytics, plant phenotyping, and remote sensing. After graduating from the University of Glasgow with Distinction for his Master’s Degree, Bharuno joined Bioinformatics and Data Science Research Center in 2018. With his background M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering and B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Institut Teknologi Bandung, he has a wide knowledge of general engineering with a specialization in data analysis and control systems. With his specialization in machine learning and data science, Bharuno has helped the center in bioinformatics analysis and machine learning development. Currently, he is the person in charge of the protein post-translational modification analysis, including phosphorylation and methylation site prediction. Even more, Bharuno also teaches quantitative research implementation in R. Since joining this research center, Bharuno has also developed programming and AI development skills for images and sequence data. Currently, Bharuno is interested in AI development for the stock exchange, bioinformatics, and cancer research.

As a Master’s degree student from Bina Nusantara University, Gregorius Natanael Elwirehardja has been involved in various deep-learning research. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in computer science from Bina Nusantara University where he first explored the fields of artificial intelligence. His main research interest includes the implementations of machine learning in various fields, including computer vision, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and many others, especially in the fields of psychology. Nicholas Dominic has collaborated with the Bioinformatics and Data Science Research Center (BDSRC) and NVIDIA-BINUS Artificial Intelligence Research and Development Center for research in the fields of Deep Learning and Bioinformatics. His research interests and expertise include, but are not limited to, mathematics of deep learning, data science, computational intelligence, and applied machine learning for bioinformatics. He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees through the academic acceleration program at Bina Nusantara University. His undergraduate studies focused on Intelligent Systems, while his graduate studies focused on Data Science. His final thesis covers deep neural network-based polygenic modeling for predicting and identifying yield-associated genes in 467 Indonesian rice accessions. Currently, he conducts Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) related research, including its imputation techniques, information contents, latent representations, and further analysis such as Linkage Disequilibrium.
