Data Rights and Data Protection in Life Sciences Sector

Bioinformatics and Data Science Research Center (BDSRC) hosted a Visiting Professor agenda in collaboration with the International Office of BINUS University from January 15 to January 19. This agenda aimed to exchange expertise and knowledge in the intellectual property of life sciences. The professors invited were Prof. Dr. iur. Claudia Seitz, M.A., Executive Master in Law & AI, a full-time professor at the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein (UFL), and Dr. iur. Boris Riemer, a lecturer at the Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University. 

January 17, 2024 – On the third day of the Visiting Professor agenda, the Bioinformatics & Data Science Research Center (BDSRC) organized a roundtable discussion on Digitalization, Data Rights, and Data Protection in the Life Sciences Sector. Representatives from the Business Law Department of BINUS University attended the event with Dr. Bambang Pratama, S.H, M.H as the moderator. 

Prof. Dr. iur. Claudia Seitz started the session by covering the principles of European Union (EU) data protection, detailing data subject rights under General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and special protection of genetic and health-related data. Data rights and protection allow individuals to have control over their personal information in terms of collection, processing, and usage. The regulation protects personal data from misuse and data breaches. She also explained about international research collaborations and data transfer outside the EU. Her presentation concluded with a look at the primary and secondary use of health and genetic data in the EU. 

In the afternoon session, a meeting was held with colleagues from INSTIPER represented by Fariha Wilisiani, S.Si., M. Biotech., Ph.D. as Vice Rector. Different intellectual property tools with different rights granted such as patents, copyrights, trademarks, and technology protection measures were discussed as guidance to establish an intellectual property body on palm oil.
