And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:3)
Established in 2011 at Bina Nusantara University (UBiNus), the Research Interest Group in Photonics and Computer Systems (RIG-PCS) took its place to enhance research activities especially in the field of photonics and computer engineering as well as multidisciplinary researches.
Inspired by the Holy Book of Genesis 1:3 : and God said “Let there be light,” and there was light, the RIG empowered the use of photonics devices for both instrumentations and measurements in many applications. The high end research and a simple application research are done as a collaborative research among young researchers, Faculty Members and students from Bachelor to doctoral Degree from UBiNus or others institutions.
The scope of the research is worldwide involving researchers from Indonesia and other countries. The institutions from Indonesia are Maju Makmur Mandiri Research Center (MMMRC), University of Pelita Harapan, Udayana University, Jakarta State University, Syiah Kuala University, Indonesia Institute of Sciences, and Bandung Institute of Technology, while from other countries are Fukui University – Japan, National Academic of Science – Belarus, Cairo University – Egypt, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre – India, Ruhr Universitdt Bochum – Germany, International Atomic Energy Agency – Austria, Sandia National Laboratories – United States, Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser Microfusion – Poland, International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) – Italy, and Sudan Institute for Natural Sciences – Sudan.
The research in computer engineering discipline is facilitated at UBiNus under the Department of Computer Engineering in Jakarta area while the high end research in photonics is facilitated by MMMRC as part of continual collaboration research since 2012. Both UBiNus and MMMRC have published more than 50 publications in reputable journal with high impact factors while the application research in computer engineering mainly published in a moderate good quality journal maintained by dedicated Indonesian researchers who stayed abroad, named Internetworking Indonesia Journal.
Research grants and any other grants received by RIG-PCS are mainly from self-funded, UBiNus, Ministry of Research and Higher Education of Indonesia, ICTP – Italy, National Centre for Physics – Pakistan, Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South, and Third World Academy of Sciences – Italy. The research grants are mainly spent for buying equipments, tools, and materials while publications, and travel expenses are supported in the form of workshop grants.
The member of RIG-PCS comes from lecturers in computer engineering, computer science fields and also junior researchers (PhD candidates) from other institutions such as Syiah Kuala University in Aceh, or former PhD students from Research Institute of Nuclear Engineering – Fukui University – Japan. This membership welcomes anyone from multidisciplinary fields regardless to the institutions they come from as long as the pure intention is to do research in the world of photonics.
Some research activities are also emphasized to solve community’s problem such as water supply mechanism in a rural area or helping industries in providing cheap – high quality tools/equipments for low-middle industry. The further explanation of current research activities can be seen in show case section in this booklet. Hopefully, this booklet can motivate the readers to join this RIG and be a part of the reputable researchers who change the nation by their results.
