Pembentukan Research Interest Group Digital Language and Behavior (RIG-D-LAB) dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan mendesak untuk menjawab berbagai tantangan kehidupan digital.  Berbagai masalah tersebut teridentifikasi berpotensi mereduksi citra manusia yang utuh, humanis dan beradab. Selayaknya perkembangan teknologi informasi dan industri dilakukan dengan merujuk pada tujuan humaniora tersebut. Merujuk pada definisi Society 5.0 yang berbunyi, “A human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social problems by a system that highly integrates cyberspace and physical space,” RIG D-LAB bertujuan memberikan kontribusi pembentukan masyarakat yang dicita-citakan Society 5.0, yaitu masyarakat yang produktif dan bahagia.

Masyarakat yang utuh berhubungan erat dengan pembentukan sistem dan tata kelola masyarakat, serta inovasi sosial. Manusia sebagai unsur dasar sebuah komunitas dan masyarakat memiliki kemampuan untuk membentuk sistem dan tata kelola melalui bahasa. Seperti yang diungkapkan oleh Sapir-Whorf, bahasa dan budaya memiliki daya pengaruh yang kuat. Adanya hubungan erat antara pikiran, bahasa, dan budaya ini mendasari teori pembentukan perilaku melalui bahasa. Sebaliknya, identifikasi tentang komunitas dan masyarakat secara tepat dapat dilakukan melalui bahasa. Dengan demikian, pemetaan masyarakat dan pembentukan sistem tata kelola masyarakat sepenuhnya dapat dimulai dengan kajian bahasa dan perilaku.

Dengan latar belakang demikian, RIG-D-LAB diharapkan mampu menyajikan solusi alternatif atas masalah yang muncul dari kompleksitas identitas, interaksi, dan rekayasa digital. Beberapa masalah yang muncul seperti hoax, disinformation, misinformation, hate-speech, social engineering, deep-fake, dan cyber-bullying dapat diidentifikasi dan direkayasa melalui bahasa. Hal ini karena kajian kebahasaan dapat mengungkapkan motif serta agenda penutur bahkan identitas penutur. Hasil kajian tersebut dapat digunakan untuk mengungkapkan kebenaran dan jauh lebih berguna untuk mencegah masalah serupa. Lebih dalam lagi, kajian kebahasaan dapat mengungkapkan identitas komunitas penutur dan memprediksi pola komunikasi dan interaksi dalam komunitas.

Bahasa yang dimaksud adalah dalam artinya yang luas (merujuk pada istilah langue oleh Ferdinand Saussure yaitu sistem bahasa yang integral dalam setiap manusia), yang mencakup sistem verbal dan non-verbal yang digunakan oleh manusia. Bahasa dapat muncul dalam berbagai wujud, meliputi pesan tertulis, simbol, warna, bau, instalasi, suara, suasana, dan gerak.

Bahasa dan perilaku digital dipercaya lebih beragam, bahkan bertransformasi serta berintegrasi dengan perwujudan dan perilaku yang ada sebelumnya. Kenyataan dan makna yang muncul juga menjadi lebih multidimensi dan perlu dipahami dengan lebih baik dan menyeluruh.

Kajian bahasa dan perilaku digital bermanfaat untuk pemetaan sistem dan penerapan tata kelola masyarakat. Kajian kebahasaan dan perilaku juga berperan penting pada inovasi teknologi dan industri. Hal ini dikarenakan bahasa yang digunakan sebuah komunitas menentukan pemaknaan suatu kejadian atau fakta. Kehadiran atau ketidakhadiran kata dalam komunitas tersebut mencitrakan sejarah, pola pikir, kepercayaan, bahkan tata-nilai terkait. Sebaliknya, pengenalan dan penerapan suatu bahasa pada suatu komunitas dapat mengubah aspek sejarah, pola pikir, serta perilakunya. Oleh karenanya, kajian bahasa merupakan elemen strategis dalam regulasi dan inovasi suatu komunitas.

Dengan latar belakang tersebut, kehadiran RIG-D-LAB diharapkan dapat menjadi wadah kajian interdisipliner untuk bahasa dan perilaku digital. Hasil penelitian serta inovasi dari RIG D-LAB diharapkan dapat memberikan dampak bagi terciptanya keselarasan hidup manusia serta harkat hidup masyarakat yang mulia.

The creation of the Research Interest Group in Digital Language and Behavior (RIG D-LAB) was supported by the urgent need to answer the various challenges of digital living. These problems have been identified to potentially reduce the human image that is complete, humanistic, and ethical. Consequently, the development of the informational technology and industry is being done in the direction of that same humanitarian goal. In accordance to Society 5.0’s definition which says, “A human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social problems by a system that highly integrates cyberspace and physical space,” RIG D-LAB aims to give contributions to the development of society which is dreamed about by Society 5.0, which is a society that is productive and happy.

A society that is complete is one that is strongly connected to the development and governance of the system of its people, as well as their social innovation. People as the fundamental element of a community and a society has the ability to develop and govern a system through language. As stated by Sapir-Whorf, language and culture have strong powers to influence. The existence of the connection between the mind, language, and culture became the theoretical framework in developing behavior through language. On the other hand, accurate identification of community and identity can be done through language. As a result, the mapping of society and the development of its system can fully be started with the evaluation of language and behavior.

With that background in mind, RIG D-LAB is hoped to be able to offer an alternative solution to the problems that come from the complexity of identity, interaction, and digital engineering. Problems such as hoaxes, disinformation, misinformation, hate-speech, social engineering, deep-fake, and cyber-bullying can be identified and engineered through language. This is because the study of language can expose the motive and agenda of the speakers as well as the speakers’ identities. The result of these studies can be used to expose the truth and to be far more useful to prevent similar problems. Furthermore, the study of language can expose the speakers’ communal identity and predict the patterns of communication and interaction within their communities.

Language, as it has been mentioned, refers to its definition at large (referring to the term langue by Ferdinand Saussure which means a language system that is integral to every man), which cover the verbal and non-verbal systems used by every man. Language can come in many forms, including in written, symbolic, color, smell, installation, sound, ambience, and movement. Digital language and behavior are believed to be more varied, that it can even transform and integrate with those previous forms and their interactions. The reality and meaning that come with them also become multidimensional and needed to be understood well and whole.

The study of language and behavior are beneficial to the mapping of the system and application of society’s governance. The study of language and behavior are also important in technological and industrial innovations. This is because the specific language that is used in a community decides the interpretation of a situation or a fact. The existence or nonexistence of a word in that community reflects its related history, mindset, belief, to even ethics and morals. On the other hand, the introduction and application of a new language to a community can change the aspects of its history, mindset, as well as behavior. As a result, the study of language is a strategical element in the regulation and innovation of a community.

With that background in hand, the arrival of RIG D-LAB is hoped to be a foundation for interdisciplinary study of digital language and behavior. The results of study and innovation from RIG D-LAB are hoped to bring an impact toward the realization of harmony in the life of us and our society.
