Fingerprint is a unique physiological characteristic of human being. This causes fingerprint be a common object of study in the development of biometric technology. Fingerprint proved accurate, safe, and uncomplicated for identification process compared to other biometric systems, such as face, iris, and voice. This study aims to create a fingerprint recognition application program using wavelet transform and Backpropagation type of artificial neural network. This research is executed offline and limited only to the right thumb, with dimension of 128 x 128 pixels. Digital fingerprint image is obtained using a scanner with grayscale color and stored in the format *.bmp. The fingerprint image will pass through several stages of image processing to enhance the image quality. Wavelet transformation is used for extracting the characteristics of a fingerprint image by selecting a small number of coefficients of the wavelet transform which is approximation coefficients. Results from the extraction of image features will be used as input to the Backpropagation type of neural network
